"My boys and I tried something new together and that was fly fishing for trout. They had the best vacation, I can't thank you enough for that."--Frederic Heuer & Sons Flushing, NY

The Yellowstone River flows just behind the Dome Mountain Lodge and Cabins. This Montana fly fishing river is the longest undamned river in the lower 48 states and perhaps one of the most famous. Rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout are common throughout the river's many miles. The stretch of river running through the ranch property boasts many unique characteristics, from long pools, deep riffles, undercut banks, and so on. This section in particular is a Montana fly fishing favorite for many who stay at Dome Mountain Ranch.

Plan your next vacation with us. Fly fishing is a wonderful outdoor sport. We practice catch and release fishing with barbless hooks. A trout is to valuable a resource to waste. We are located only a half hour from the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The park is a must see journey back into time. It's also an option for taking a day off from a fishing trip with your family and seeingIf you are interested in fishing the world famous blue-ribbon Yellowstone River with us this summer, send us an e-mail or give us a holler today toll free at 1-800-313-4868.

A stretch of the Yellowstone River great for Montana Fly Fishing - Yankee Jim CanyonThe Yellowstone River enters the western fly fishing town of Gardiner, Montana approximately 18 miles south of Dome Mountain Ranch. Upon entering the state of Montana this stretch of river would appear more as an overgrown mountain freestone stream offering boulder strewn stretches of oxygen rich waters. Long deep tailing riffles serve as quality holding areas for acrobatic Rainbow. Behind the shadows of car sized boulders lie in wait green backed native cutthroat trout keeping a watchful eye on the surface for perfect presentations. Big Browns cruise for a good meal.

As this Montana fly fishing river grows in size it begins to gain volume due to the many high mountain freestone tributaries which begin high in both the Gallatin and Beartooth ranges of the Rocky Mountains. Often these Montana trout streams will pull attention away from the main Yellowstone River and provide many days worth of adventure and exploration. The Gardiner river actually meets with the Yellowstone right outside the park and serves as the first influence. Further downstream coming from both the high ranges of the Rockies enter such unknown yet beckoning waters like "Bear Creek", "Rock Creek", "Slip n Slide", and "Cedar Creek" to name a few. After all this aquatic life being pumped into a nearly a perfect river, it is obvious why a lifetime of Montana fly fishing trips are required to fish it all.

Several miles downstream from the Park the Yellowstone River is reduced in width at "Joe Brown" and triples in depth as it enters the well known historic landmark of "Yankee Jim Canyon". This made possible by the almost overgrown large, timbered mountain we call "The Dome". Only navigable by the most experienced oarsman, many of the famous fishing holes still hold the whispers of the ghosts from the past, such as "Box Car Hole", "Yankee Jim's Revenge" and many more. At one time the railroad ran along here. These names are a testament to not only the wildness of this river, but also the mystery of many big Montana trout which lie beneath it's foaming windows.

High Mountain Secret Freestones

There is a reason you won't read about these Montana trout streams in any magazines. We like to keep them a secret and ask that you promise to do the same! The Absoroka-Beartooth range of the Rocky Mountains is best known for it's rugged and jagged features and for having on average the highest peaks in the state. The many wilderness areas of the Beartooths are seldom travelled, and fished even less. While certain dangers such as Grizzly bears and Moose along with wolves and other dangerous wildlife can be an issue, we think it just adds to the adventure.

If you love to see fish "come" to the fly with every well placed cast and wade waters most will only see in postcards, then these gin-clear mountain freestones streams should get your attention.  Many of these drainages begin high in the Beartooth Mountains and maintain unbelievably healthy amounts of feisty wild Cut Throats and butter-colored Brown Trout.  Secluded from the rest of the world, you will often feel very alone on these special Montana waters.  For the experienced and adventurous fly fisher, we bet you won't regret at least one day exploring the endless wilderness.

Adding a day or more of these wonderful waters can round out any Montana fly fishing adventure.
